Since its inception in 2016, Soch has captured the spirit of intercultural dialogue and diplomatic exchange that is present throughout New York City. As one of the few conferences in the US to focus on Pakistan, we aim to foster constructive dialogue that can produce tangible change within Pakistan and the larger South Asian community.
Despite Pakistan’s recent advancements in the economic and political sectors, there is one aspect that remains neglected: the state of the country’s health system. The country spends a mere $36.20 per capita on its healthcare infrastructure, although there is much intervention needed to improve the state of a system that is crucial in delivering health services to 197 million individuals. What can Pakistan do to capitalize its existing resources and improve health outcomes for its people? This year, Soch seeks to answer this question, and others, by identifying practical, innovative and actionable policy and development solutions. Thus, we are proud to present our theme for Soch 2019, Health as a Human Right in Pakistan.
Over the course of the conference, we are eager to explore pressing issues that exist in the public health system; to do so, we aim to foster discourse on women’s reproductive rights, the current mental health infrastructure, and lastly, how poverty and violence serve as backdrops through which health inequities fester. These fundamental issues aggregate, forming a cycle in which a system meant to aid those in need, fails.
Soch returns on March 9th, 2019 to Columbia University to once again provide a platform that hopes to ultimately inspire individuals to enact meaningful change among their communities. Our team has been working tirelessly since September in order to make Soch a fascinating and memorable experience for all our attendees.
