Brooklyn College and their Global Jazz Masters degree program (in association with the H. Wiley Institute for Studies in American Music) is excited to announce their Spring 2019 Big Band concert with special guests from the acclaimed artist collective Brooklyn Raga Massive: Arun Ramamurthy on violin, Pawan Benjamin on bansuri, and Swaminathan Selvaganesh on the kanjira. The concert, directed by Global Jazz Master program director D.D. Jackson, will feature traditional big band repertoire and a short Indian Classical set, a special arrangement of an Arun Ramamurthy Trio composition by Global Jazz Masters student Julian Velasco, plus original student compositions inspired by Raga by Global Jazz students Varvara Maldonado and Hanol Kim, as well as by D.D. Jackson himself.
Brooklyn College Jazz Program – In addition to traditional jazz studies, an emphasis on global rhythms, alternate notation and improvisation techniques, and contemporary practice ensure that the student will be prepared for performance and study of jazz as it is practiced by today’s innovators. Internationally-recognized faculty, an expanded ensemble program, a Conservatory Big Band, and access to New York jazz resources—coupled with the low cost of CUNY tuition—make this excellent program competitive, progressive, and encompassing of the entire jazz story.
